Matter and Thread Border Router Compatibility Checker
Estimated compatibility requirements
You need a compatible Matter controller in the primary ecosystem.
Thread devices also require a compatible Thread border router.
Confirm each Wi-Fi Matter device's supported band and local network requirements.
Count transport before choosing a hub
A Matter-over-Thread sensor or lock needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. A Wi-Fi Matter device needs a Matter controller and the supported Wi-Fi network, but it does not need Thread solely because it carries the Matter logo.
Check the exact controller hardware
Phones can commission devices but should not automatically be counted as an always-available home controller or border router. Verify the exact speaker, display, TV box, hub, or Home Assistant radio and its current software against the chosen ecosystem.
Map ecosystem sharing and fallback
Decide which ecosystem commissions first, whether multi-admin sharing is required, which vendor app retains advanced settings, and what local physical control remains when internet, hub, phone, or account access fails.
Planning questions
Does every Matter device need a Thread border router?
No. Matter can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet as well as Thread. Only the planned Matter-over-Thread path creates the Thread border-router requirement.
Is a Matter controller the same as a Thread border router?
No. They are separate roles, although one physical product can perform both. Verify each role on the exact model and software version.
