Matter and Thread answer different questions
Matter describes the device-control layer, while Thread provides a low-power IP mesh for supported accessories. A Matter-over-Thread sensor or lock needs both a Matter commissioning path and a compatible Thread network path.
Name the controller and border router separately
The Matter controller commissions and manages the accessory. The Thread border router connects the Thread mesh to the wider IP network. One hub can perform both roles, but a phone, speaker, display, or hub should be checked by its exact model and software.
Wi-Fi Matter devices do not need Thread
A Matter device using Wi-Fi can join the home without a Thread radio path, while a Matter-over-Thread accessory cannot simply use the Wi-Fi password. Confirm the transport shown in the exact product listing before buying a border router.
Plan the ecosystem and multi-admin path
Decide whether the accessory will live in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or more than one ecosystem. Check controller support, Thread border-router availability, and whether the desired multi-admin setup is supported before opening the box.
Keep local recovery visible
Locks, sensors, and lights should still have a recovery plan when the internet, hub, or phone is unavailable. Record the reset process, keep physical entry or manual controls available, and avoid assuming Matter removes every vendor account requirement.
