Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi and Zigbee Device Checklist

Identify the application standard, radio network, controller, border router, and bridge required by each smart-home device.

Aqara Hub M3

Matter describes interoperability, not one radio

Matter can run over Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. A Matter logo therefore does not reveal whether the device needs a Thread border router or joins the home Wi-Fi.

Thread needs a border router

Thread devices join a low-power mesh and need a compatible border router to reach the wider IP network. A Matter controller may or may not include that role.

Zigbee normally needs a brand or compatible hub

Legacy Aqara Zigbee devices do not become Thread devices. A bridge can expose supported functions to Matter while the device remains on its Zigbee network.

Write the five-part requirement

For each product record its protocol, radio, controller, border router or bridge, and primary app. This small table prevents most hub-shopping mistakes.

Buying framework

What to check before you choose

Checklist

  • Confirm the exact lock, doorbell, thermostat, controller, and ecosystem versions before buying.
  • Check what remains available locally when Wi-Fi, cloud service, or a subscription is unavailable.
  • Map wiring, door dimensions, radio coverage, storage, and household access before installation.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth as interchangeable labels.
  • Buying an ecosystem feature before confirming the required hub, controller, or border router.
  • Ignoring subscription boundaries, batteries, replacement access, and emergency fallback controls.

Category checks

  • Matter is an application standard; Thread and Zigbee are network technologies.
  • A Matter controller and a Thread border router are different roles.
  • Prefer physical and local fallback controls for essential routines.

Decision rule

Choose the device with the clearest compatibility and local fallback path; add premium ecosystem features only when they remove a recurring household problem.
